Azerbaijan joins Earth Hour celebration

Azerbaijan joined the globally celebrated Earth Hour on March 28.

The International Campaign "Earth Hour 2015" organized by the World Wildlife Fund gathered more than 1 billion people from 172 countries to show solidarity against the climate change.

The Earth Hour is a symbol of respect for nature, concern for the limited resources of our planet. This most mass public event in the history of mankind day is held every last Saturday of March.

This year, people of the world celebrated the date at 8:30 p.m. symbolically turning off the lights and other electrical appliances not important at the moment, for one hour, to stimulate interest in climate change.

Symbolic buildings of the big cities are also turning off the lights on the day to bow to the nature. In Baku, the Government House and the landmark building like the Maiden Tower, the Heydar Aliyev Center put out the light with the rest of the world.

Many Azerbaijanis joined the festivity with flashlights and lighters, gathered at the main arena of the city Azadlig Square. The candle installation was created here.

In addition, the bike tour Critical Mass Baku was conducted in the square along with various flash mobs.

Azerbaijan joined the initiative that started in Sydney in 2007, with turning off the lights of the symbol of Baku, the Maiden Tower, in March 2011.

The official coordinator of the campaign in Azerbaijan is a Public Association IDEA. The campaign is implementing some large-scale local and international projects to protect the environment and to promote innovative approaches towards solving environmental problems.

One of the most notable activities of the IDEA in the three past years since its establishment has been a massive tree planting campaign during which more than 3,472,000 trees have been planted.
