Madiba remembered in Baku

Baku commemorated the leader of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) Nelson Mandela.

United Nations representative office in Azerbaijan flew the UN flag at half mast to commemorate the leader of the RSA, UN Department of Public Information told Trend on Dec. 13.

The former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela, died at his home in Johannesburg on Dec. 5 at age 95 after a long illness.

He was born in 1918 in South Africa. He was a member of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) and led the fight against racism.

Mandela was arrested in 1966 and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1993, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 1994 he became the first black president of the Republic of South Africa.
