Azerbaijan to join Rio+20 Earth Summiit

The UN Department of Public Information (DPI) Baku office has hosted a seminar for the journalists and representatives of NGOs. The representative of the UNDPI in Azerbaijan Envera Selimovic pointed out importance of journalists` to be well aware of the Rio+20 conference.

The seminar highlighted that Azerbaijan attended the conference in 2002. Azerbaijan will be represented in Rio+20 Earth Summit 2012 with the 38-man delegation. The seminar participants also watched a film on history and activity of the UN.

Also referred to as the Rio+20 or the Earth Summit 2012 due to the initial conference held in Rio in 1992, the objectives of the Summit are: to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development; to assess progress towards internationally agreed goals on sustainable development and to address new and emerging challenges. The Summit will also focus on two specific themes: a green economy in the context of poverty eradication and sustainable development, and an institutional framework for sustainable development.
