Strong quake jolts Zagatala - UPDATE - PHOTOS

“I am in Zagatala region now. We examined the central part of the region and now are going to visit the villages.

There have been no casualties or injured people during the earthquake”, Minister of Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan, Colonel-General Kemaleddin Heydarov told APA.

Minister said the quake damaged old buildings in some villages. “There were no cases of destruction and collapses in the center and villages. We are identifying the damaged buildings and will give details about the damage later”.

Heydarov said there was no problem or other unsettling issue in Zagatala and nearby regions. “The people continue their daily life and the infrastructure is working normally”.



Azerbaijan’s Emergency Minister, Colonel General Kamaladdin Heydarov visited Zagatala region due to the quake occurred in Azerbaijan’s north-west.

APA reports quoting the Emergency Ministry’s website that the aftershocks were felt in Zagatala, Shaki, Gakh, Oghuz, Mingechevir, Gedebey and Shamkir.

The ministry’s aviation detachment and the other emergency-rescue forces were involved in the site.

5.5-magnitude (about 7-magnitude by Richter scale) first quake was recorded on 17 km south-west of Zagatala region in 10-12km depth.

Then two more quakes occurred after it.



Earthquake in Zagatala region did not affect the activity of the international airport.

Spokesperson of AZAL Maharram Safarli told APA that the earthquake did not have a material impact on the building of Zagatala airport: ‘Plaster crumbled in some places, electronic doors went out of order. However, the runways are in good condition, today’s Baku-Zagatala-Baku flight will be implemented as usual’.

Note that, the flights from baku to Zagatal are realized on Mondays and Fridays at 15:00.

Remind that, at 09:40 today, a quake hit the 17 km south-west of Zagatala region at a depth of 10-12 km. The magnitude was 5.5 (about 7 points on a 12-point scale). Tremors were felt in other areas as well as in Ganja-Gazakh, Central Aran, Karabakh and the regions.


The second quake occurred in Zagatala region.

ANAS Republic Seismological Service Center told APA that the quake was recorded on 16 km south-west from Zagatala region at 10.38 by local time.

4,5-magnitude quake occurred in the depth of 11 km.

According to the report, the earthquake caused destructions. Residents of multistoried buildings left their homes.

An earthquake jolted the Zagatala region of Azerbaijan this morning. The magnitude of the quake was over 5 point, witness told Day.Az.  According to the report, the quaked damaged houses. No victims reported yet.
