Traffic police urges tougher driver penalties

More stringent action against those violating traffic rules can lead to frustration amongst pedestrians, rather than drivers. Pedestrians often ignore the rules, head of the Main State Traffic Police Department, Police Major General Ramiz Zeynalov said in an interview with the Azerbaijan newspaper.

"If a driver follows the rules, he or she will not be bothered by administrative penalties and fines," he said. "Who is fined? Only offenders are fined. Hence, there is a problem with people who do not want to face up to their errors."

He said that strict measures are used in every country with respect to violators of traffic rules.

"Some drivers complain of low wages and high fines," he said. "This anger is unreasonable and subjective. Penalties are applied to restore discipline on the roads. Innocent people die because of the indifference and irresponsibility of drivers. It is necessary to toughen penalties."

Drivers are increasingly unhappy with the large number of radars and cameras. Many accidents in the country occur due to speeding and traffic must be controlled.
