A landslide map is being developed in Azerbaijan, Geology Institute Director and National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA) Vice-President Akif Alizadeh said.
“A number of areas, including Baku- Absheron Peninsula, Mingachevir and Lankaran –Talish, are prone to suffer from landslides,” he said "These areas are considered weak from a geological point of view. Thus, it is necessary to create maps of these zones."
He also explained the cause of the landslide occurred in Lerik in 2011, referring to the geology weakness of this area. "Landslides mainly occur in loose soil. Humidity and excessive rainfall contribute to their occurrence. Sometimes landslides triggered by man-made factors," he added.
