Iran calls for peace in Syria, Yemen

13 October 2015 [15:29] - TODAY.AZ

An Iranian senior official has said that the wars in Syria and Yemen should come to an end.

"Wars in Yemen and Syria should end quickly and we need to take all the necessary measures to establish peace in the region," the official IRNA news agency quoted Head of Iran’s Strategic Research Center of the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati as saying at a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson in Tehran Oct. 13.

"Terrorists from more than 80 countries have come to the region and they conduct war against the regional legitimate states forming extremist groups," he added.

He further urged Saudi Arabia to stop its airstrikes against Yemeni people.

Describing the situation in the Middle East as critical, Jan Eliasson also called for peace and said more efforts should be made to establish peace in the region.

Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war about four years ago, the United States and some of its allies have supported what they term moderate armed Syrian opposition factions, as they do not believe Syrian President Bashar Assad to be the country's legitimate authority.

Iran has opposite points of view and positions with some regional countries, in particular with Saudi Arabia on conflicts in Yemen, Syria , and Bahrain.
