Turkey waiting for European re-shae by crisis?

14 January 2014 [12:13] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey would take its part in an EU after the union was shaped by crisis, Turkey's EU Minister and chief negotiator Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Addressing Turkish ambassadors at the 6th annual Turkish Ambassadors' Conference in Ankara, Cavusoglu said the EU will prefer flexible integration after overcoming the crisis.

"This situation makes Turkey's accession process to the EU easier," said the EU minister by stressing that the most important part of the Turkish government's principled foreign policy was the ongoing membership talks with the EU.

The most important development for relations between the EU and Turkey was the "Visa-exemption Agreement," said Cavusoglu, adding, "Turkey achieved an important success, which is a first [in talks with the EU] through the 'Visa-exemption Agreement.'"

Turkey and the EU signed the Readmission Agreement on December 16 in exchange for launching talks on visa liberalization for Turkish citizens.

Noting that Turkish citizens would travel in the EU visa-free in three or three and a half years at least, Cavusoglu stressed that the most important psychological obstacles for EU-Turkey relations will be overcome through the agreement.

He also indicated that the implementation of readmission agreements is impossible before the opening of chapter 24, which was blocked by Greek Cypriot administration.

Cavusoglu also reminded that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan would pay official visits to Brussels on January 21 and German capital Berlin on Feburary 4, where he will hold high-level meetings.

Cavusoglu also reminded of French President Francois Hollande's visit to Turkey at the end of January, which will provide Turkey an opportunity to see the future of membership talks with the EU.
