US analyst: Azerbaijan can play a useful role in the UN Security Council simply by keeping the Caucasus on the agenda

“Azerbaijan can play a useful role in the UN Security Council simply by keeping the Caucasus on the agenda” Jeff Sahadeo, a director of Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at the Carlton University, said.

By this he mentioned “to get past the western view of the region as an unstable dangerous place on the one hand and nothing more than a source for oil and gas on the other”.

“This could help Azerbaijan as well, by framing itself as a leader in terms of cooperation with Georgia, Russia, and Turkey”, he underscored.

In the meanwhile, the analyst is skeptical that the Security Council could mediate effectively on Nagorno-Karabakh issue, when all its other efforts have failed.

One critical issue that may well come before the SC, in the near future is Iran and its nuclear ambitions.

Mr. Sahadeo believes, given that relations between Baku and Teheran are quite cool, Azerbaijan at least as a neighbor might be able to offer some insight into Iran’s regional politics, rather than being a moderator.
