FRIDE analysts: Poland sees Azerbaijan as the most important country in Caucasus

Armenia is the least important country for Poland, which is taking EU presidency, and Poland has been more focused on Azerbaijan, analysts of FRIDE, a European think tank for global action, said in their report entitled “Is Poland still committed to the Eastern neighborhood?”.

The analysts viewed the Poland’s political priorities and non-priorities in the post-Soviet region. “In the South Caucasus, Poland has been more focused on Georgia and Azerbaijan. This region is important for Poland’s energy security. Georgian and Azerbaijani energy companies are part of the “Sarmatia” consortium along with Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian companies. The consortium has a long-standing (and somewhat moribund) plan to build a continuation of the Odessa-Brody pipeline to the Polish city of Plock to transport Caspian oil to Europe”, the analysts said and added:

“Armenia has been the least important state for Poland due to Yerevan’s orientation towards Russia and its lack of strong EU ambition. Armenian was the last EaP country where Poland opened an embassy”.
