
The European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan issued a statement on convictions of a group of persons detained during the Public Chamber’s unauthorized rally on April 2, 2011, APA reports. The statement reads: “The European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Azerbaijan.
Recalling the EU statements following the peaceful demonstrations of April 2nd, 2011 expressing concerns about freedom of assembly in the country, the EU Delegation regrets yesterday’s convictions of six participants who took part in these demonstrations.
The EU Delegation calls on the judiciary to ensure a fair, transparent and evidence-based appeal process.
The EU Delegation will continue to closely monitor and report on domestic developments in the country and remains committed to assisting Azerbaijan in fulfilling its own commitments with regard to democracy and the rule of law.
The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Azerbaijan aligns itself with this local EU statement”, the document reads.
