President Ilham Aliyev: Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a major problem of regional security - UPDATE - PHOTOS

Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Dmitry Medvedev of Russia met here on Tuesday.

Greeting his Azerbaijani counterpart Dmitry Medvedev said, “It is a good venue for discussing current state of bilateral relations, regional agenda and taking a look at bilateral affairs.”

The Russian leader expressed his willingness to concentrate on development of bilateral dialogue between the two countries. According to him, the progress on the dialogue includes signing of `fundamental` agreements, increase in trade turnover and some huge projects.

On the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Medvedv said, “I would like to have quite a sincere talk with you on what to do further, how developments are going on, taking into consideration our last trilateral meeting held in Kazan and previous meetings in this format.”

President Ilham Aliyev thanked the Russian leader for his invitation to visit Sochi.

“Agreements you mentioned are the climax of what has been done in recent years and reflect the form, spirit and nature of our friendly, neighborly and partnership relations,” the Head of State said.

President Aliyev pointed out economic, political and humanitarian cooperation between the two nations is gaining a momentum.

“We are the neighbors, two Caspian nations, two Caucasian countries, and, of course, developments in the region in many respects hang on our interaction as well,” he said.

The President thanked his Russian counterpart`s efforts to solve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“We, in Azerbaijan, highly appreciate your personal involvement in this process. These rounds of negotiations held in a trilateral format, of course, brought positions of the sides very much closer,” Azerbaijani leader said.

According to the President, it is a major problem of regional security and Azerbaijan is interested in the soonest resolution of the conflict so that displaced persons could return home and peace could be established in the region.

Later the same day, Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev has today completed his working visit to the Russian Federation. At the Sochi International Airport the President was seen off by Sochi mayor Anatoliy Pakhomov and other officials.

Upon his arrival to the capital, at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, the Head of State was welcomed by Prime Minister Artur Rasizade and Baku mayor Hajibala Abutalibov.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has headed to Sochi, Russia, for a working visit. At the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, the Head of State was seen off by Prime Minister Artur Rasizade and Baku Mayor Hajibala Abutalybov.

The Azerbaijani and Russian Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Dmitry Medvedev will discuss Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement and the legal status of the Caspian Sea at the talks in Sochi on Tuesday, RIA Novosti reported.

The press-service of the Russian President told journalists that President Aliyev will pay a working visit to Russia at the invitation of Russian counterpart.

"The extensive exchange of views on key aspects of Russian-Azerbaijani relations, as well as on the urgent issues of regional agenda, especially the negotiation process on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement is planned to be held during the meeting of the two leaders," a statement said.

The Kremlin recalled that the Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents regularly meet during the trilateral talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement with the Armenian President.

Presidents Medvedev and Aliyev will also discuss the Caspian theme in Sochi in the context of the ongoing negotiations on the legal status of the Caspian Sea and in light of the decisions of the Third Summit of Heads of Caspian littoral states in Baku in November 2010," the Kremlin press-service said.
