
On July 4, First Deputy Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Head of the Azerbaijani delegation in NATO Parliamentary Assembly Ziyafat Asgarov met with the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Central Asia James Appathurai, APA reports.
Asgarov said that Azerbaijan was one of the closest allies of NATO and said that Baku was successfully cooperating with the Alliance in the spheres of politics, diplomacy, reforms, antiterrorism protection within Partnership for Peace and Individual Partnership program: “Our peacekeepers exemplary serve in Afghanistan. Azerbaijan has always been near his alliance in the antiterrorism protection, as well as is closely participating in the restoration of peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic space”.
Asgarov spoke about Armenia’s occupation policy. Nagorno Karabakh problem, the violated rights of 1 mln Azerbaijanis and called NATO be active in this issue and in execution of resolution of UN Security Council.
Appathurai highly assessed NATO-Azerbaijan relations, thanked Azerbaijan for assistance rendered in Afghanistan, underlined that Azerbaijan was an important for NATO from a strategic point of view.
The Special Representative said that there were good opportunities for broadening and development of relations. Noting Azerbaijan’s very important role in the region in the field of antiterrorism protection, Appathurai said that he would work hard for the cooperation to be fruitful.
Touching on Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Appathurai said that UN supported Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
