Following their extended meeting, Presidents of the Republic of
Azerbaijan and the State of Palestine Ilham Aliyev and Mahmoud Abbas
made press statements on June 28, Azerbaijani president’s official
website reported.
President Abbas expressed his deep gratitude to
President Aliyev for an invitation to visit the brotherly country. "I
am thankful to your government, people, the country for assistance and
support in resolving the Palestinian problem, Palestine’s gaining of
independence, freedom and an independent state with a capital in the
Holy Jerusalem, which we consider one of the three holy places of Islam.
The first is Jerusalem, second - Medina and third - Mecca," he said.
He said now the sides are at the beginning of networking.
"We
are at the initial stage of establishing cooperation in all fields. I
hope that we will see your support in the development of these relations
in the future," President Abbas said.
Abbas also voiced an
appreciation for the assistance and allocation of a building for the
Palestinian embassy. "I would like to thank for providing the
residential building for the ambassador and rendering him the necessary
support. We and our people appreciate it," he said.
President
Abbas said he is proud of the Azerbaijan Republic. "We know that the
first democratic republic was created here in 1918. This means that you
are considered mature in the way of democracy and you teach democracy to
others. This is a great cause. We are also aware that the Azerbaijani
woman has the right to vote since 1918. You go along the path of
democracy. We have much common. We are also moving toward democracy. Our
women also vote, elect and are elected. They take their rightful place
everywhere, including in the municipalities. The aim is to achieve
gender equality. We, at some extent, are learning from you in the issue
of women's equality," he stressed.
Abbas stressed that the sides
discussed the Palestinian issue. "This is a political issue," he added.
During the talks with Mr. President, I assured him that our first,
second and third way is a peaceful way, it passes through peaceful
negotiations. We say all paths lead to peace. The world agrees with us
in this issue. If the Israeli government returns to borders of 1967 at
the international level, we are ready to negotiate with them for peace.
But, unfortunately, we failed to do so. Therefore, they proposed to
apply to the United Nations. Let them tell us, what people, who are
living under occupation for over 63 years, should do? We want
independence at least. We are working on it. If we do not succeed, then
we will turn to the UN. Moreover, we also have internal problems. But,
we are working on this issue. We have signed a document on the national
unity and took some steps with the help of Allah. We are seeking to
create the Palestinian Authority through this national unity. With the
help of Allah, we will soon reach our goals in this issue."
There
are common problems here, Abbas said. "You and we have common
problems," President Abbas said. "Your land is also occupied. We both
have refugees. The UN has adopted four well-known resolutions that apply
to you - Resolution No. 822, 853, 874 and 884. All these UN resolutions
call for peace. The UN has adopted 15 and more resolutions on our
issue. These resolutions also call for peace. But, we are patiently
waiting for these issues have been resolved peacefully, so that we can
enjoy the benefits conferred by the world."
President Abbas
underscored that the Palestinian side was watching the Kazan meeting.
"We observed the position of Russia, France and the U.S. in addressing
this problem," he said. "This is evidence to the world’s interest
towards the problem. But, we say that it is better to solve these
problems today than tomorrow. Because, no one can guarantee that they
will be resolved tomorrow. We hope that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,
refugee problem had been resolved. We do not require anything extra of
the international law. We have common problems. We want them to be
resolved. We hope that peace established on these lands and the world's
people lived in peace and tranquility," "Thank you for your hospitality.
We hope that Mr. President will visit Palestine in a comfortable time
for him. We hope these visits were repeated," Abbas stated.

Presidents of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the State of Palestine
Ilham Aliyev and Mahmoud Abbas delivered press statements on June 28
after an extended meeting, Azerbaijani president’s official website
reported.
President Aliyev sincerely welcomed President Abbas in
Azerbaijan. He said President Abbas’s visit is historical. "The
Palestinian president arrived in Azerbaijan with an official visit for
the first time. I would like to thank you for accepting my invitation
and visiting Azerbaijan. Your visit is of great significance," President
Aliyev said.
"The Azerbaijan-Palestine relations are
developing," Aliyev underscored. "The relations between our two peoples
have a long history. Our peoples treated each other with great affection
for centuries. Very good opportunities exist at the present stage of
our relations to develop the bilateral relations. We want our relations
have developed in all areas and that this development manifested itself
in all directions. Our political relations are at a very high level.
Your visit to Azerbaijan is obvious evidence to this. The Palestinian
Embassy has begun to operate in Azerbaijan a few months ago. It is a
very important event. I believe new opportunities will be defined for
the development of our bilateral relations thanks to the embassy’s
operation."
"We seek a good cooperation in the economic sphere,
and I am confident that these issues will also be discussed during the
visit," President Aliyev said. "I believe concrete proposals for
deepening economic cooperation and investment organization will be put
forward during the visit. There are also good opportunities for
cooperation in the humanitarian area. Of course, we can think about new
forms of traditional ties in the cultural sphere. In short, I think that
all aspects of bilateral relations will be mulled during your visit and
we will achieve good results."
Aliyev stressed that the two sides also exchanged views on regional issues and processes occurring in the world.
"We
together with you had a broad exchange of views on the current phase of
the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. I would like to reiterate that
Azerbaijan supports the State of Palestine in all international
organizations. Azerbaijan is close to Palestine in all discussions at
the Organization of Islamic Conference, the United Nations and this will
continue. We believe an independent, sovereign State of Palestine,
whose capital should be East Jerusalem, will be soon created. This is
our position that we defend and we will further defend it at all
international organizations. This, on the one hand, is our fraternal
duty. On the other hand, such a position is established on the basis of
the international law. The support to the State of Palestine on a global
scale, growth of this support indicates that your diplomacy, your
political initiative and your personal activities won the sympathy
worldwide," he said.
The sides also exchanged views on
developments ongoing in the region. "I have informed you about the last
stage of negotiations to settle the Armenian-Azerbaijani
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity recognized
by the international community has been violated for many years. We
have more than one million refugees and IDPs. Twenty percent of our
lands are under the occupation. Azerbaijanis were subjected to the
ethnic cleansing policy in their native land. All the buildings were
destroyed in the occupied territories. The Armenians have destroyed
schools, hospitals, museums, historical and religious sites," Aliyev
said.
President Aliyev underscored that the international community supports Azerbaijan's position.
"The
UN Security Council adopted four resolutions on this issue, which
stipulate that the Armenian occupation forces must unconditionally
withdraw from the occupied lands. Unfortunately, the Armenian side still
ignores these resolutions. Other international organizations have the
similar position. The Organization of the Islamic Conference, European
Parliament, Council of Europe and OSCE adopted similar decisions and
resolutions. Thus, the legal framework to resolve the issue is strong
enough. I am sure that Azerbaijan will restore its territorial
integrity. We want to resolve this issue quickly and peacefully," he
said.
"Once again I welcome you, Mr. President, in Azerbaijan. I
would like to reiterate that we attach a great importance to this visit.
This visit will remain as the first visit in the history of our
countries. But, of course, the visits will continue in future - at the
level of ministers, and business structures that must interact better. I
am confident that we will continue our meetings in future," President
Aliyev said.
