UK marks Azerbaijan's national holiday

The UK marked the 93rd anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, Azerbaijani embassy in this country said.

The event was attended by ambassadors and embassy representatives, marshal of the Diplomatic Corps, Foreign Office officials, MPs, representatives of various associations, the Turkish and Azerbaijani communities, as well as Azerbaijanis studying in UK.

The event was opened by Azerbaijani ambassador to the UK Fakhraddin Gurbanov, who spoke about the importance of Republic Day. He informed the event participants about the fact that the first democratic republic in the Muslim East was established in Azerbaijan, about this republic’s successes during its short existence.

After that, Gurbanov said that by the Azerbaijani President’s order members of the House of Lords Baroness O'Cathain and Lord Fraser were awarded "Dostlug" Order for establishing cooperation relations, and especially for the role in familiarizing the British public with Azerbaijan. Handing over the Order to MPs, Gurbanov reminded about the contribution they have made to expansion of political, economic and cultural ties between the two countries and voiced his warmest gratitude.

Baroness O'Cathain and Lord Fraser expressed satisfaction due to a high award of the Azerbaijan state and expressed their gratitude to the country’s leadership. They invited the British public to visit Azerbaijan - a country with a great economic potential, rich culture, and become familiar with this country’s culture and people. They also congratulated Azerbaijan on its victory at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011.
