Congressman Bill Shuster: Azerbaijan is one of US’s most loyal allies

"I think it is important that we thank the Azerbaijani government, the president, for their great friendship and they have been a great ally since they broke away from the Soviet Union in the 1990", said co-chairman of the US House of Representatives’ working group on Azerbaijan Bill Shuster at the interview to RFE/RL.

The congressman said that Azerbaijan is one of the most loyal allies of the US: "Azerbaijan has been one of our staunchest allies in the world, with a neighbor to the south, Iran, and the Russians to the north, it is a very, very difficult neighborhood and yet Azerbaijan still turns to the United States as a friend and an ally".

Commenting on the visit of the US Congress delegation to Azerbaijan, Shuster noted that they will meet with President Ilham Aliyev and discuss bilateral ties and issues on development of democratic institutions in the country.

Chris Murphy, who is included to the delegation, said that this is the first trip to Azerbaijan for the rest of them: "We believe it is important to be in Azerbaijan, especially since it is a country that is so politically positioned but often doesn’t get as much attention from the United States Congress as it should".
