Latif Husseinov elected chairman of European Committee for Prevention of Torture

The elections of the chairman of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment were held.

Azerbaijani member of CPT, chief of Milli Mejlis' (National Assembly) department on constitutional legislation Latif Husseinov was elected to the post of CPT Chairman. Latif Husseinov was elected to this post for two years.

Italian Mauro Palma led CPT prior to Latif Husseinov. This is the first event in the history of CPT when Azerbaijani lawyer has been elected a head of such authoritative institution.

It’ll be recalled that, so-called Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) is the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which is for the purpose of monitoring and evaluation of the treatment with prison inmates entitled to pay unlimited visits to member-states’ penitentiaries, including hospitals, police stations, children’s colonies, places for keeping foreign citizens, and dispensaries of insane.
