Journalists should not be arrested for their articles or political beliefs, Azerbaijani Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov told journalists today.
He made the statement while commenting on the arrest of several journalists in Turkey.
He stressed that journalists inform the public about ongoing events.
"If a journalist is involved in processes, then certain problems arise. We are closely watching the developments in Turkey and the processes associated with the arrest of Milliyet newspaper and Oda TV channel employees. We wonder whether these individuals were directly involved in the developments or simply informed society about what is happening," Amashov said.
Turkish officials reported that 10 journalists were arrested on charges of having links with the Ergenekon terrorist organization.
