EU to allocate over 1 million euro for democratic development in Azerbaijan

The EU will allocate 1.2 million euro for the development of democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan in 2011, Fuad Huseynov, a representative of the EU office in Azerbaijan, said in his speech at an international conference on the topic of editorial freedom, ethics and transparency in Azerbaijani media.

According to him, media freedom is reflected as a basic principle in agreements concluded between the EU and Azerbaijan.

"Human rights and democratization are factors that have always been very closely monitored by the EU. The EU believes that freedom of expression is a thing that leads to stability. The EU is trying to help Azerbaijan in this direction," Huseynov said.

He said the EU and the Council of Europe assist Azerbaijan in adopting a law on defamation.
