Washington to host conference dedicated to Khojaly tragedy's anniversary

A conference dedicated to the anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy will be at George Washington University in Washington on Feb. 25, the Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC) said today.

The event is organized by the Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA), the AAC, the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA), the American-Turkish Association in Washington, the District of Columbia (ATA-DC) and the Turkish Association of Students.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States Yashar Aliyev will make an opening address at the conference.

Professor of the University of Montana, Director of the Council of the AAC Thomas Goltz, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Azerbaijani Permanent Mission to the U.N. Tofig Musayev, General Director of the Azerbaijani-American Council Dr. Javid Huseynov, and ATAA President Ergun Kirlikovali will also address the conference.

The Armenian military forces committed genocide in Khojaly on Feb. 26, 1992. More than 600 people were killed, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 old men. A total of 1,000 civilians were disabled during the genocide. 8 families were annihilated, 130 children lost one parent, and 25 lost both. Additionally, 1,275 peaceful residents were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 remains unknown.
