EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby will visit Azerbaijan by late this week (Feb. 28), a diplomatic source told Trend.
This visit can be Semneby’s last visit to Baku in this position, because his mandate is expiring this week. Semneby is likely to officially announce the accomplishment of his mandate in Baku, the source said.
However, a final decision has not been taken on expiry of Semneby’s mandate, because the political discussions are underway at the EU.
Semneby is currently on a visit to Tbilisi. He will leave Tbilisi for Brussels to discuss a possible extension of his mandate. So, he is probable to visit Azerbaijan no earlier than Friday.
In late May last year, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton offered to withdraw the EU special representatives from the South Caucasus countries and Moldova - zones of 'frozen conflicts'.
According to Ashton, positions of special representative and representative of the European External Action Service (EEAS) must be combined.
