Head of Azerbaijan's PACE delegation comments on resumed sub-committee on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

28 January 2011 [18:55] - TODAY.AZ
Restoring the PACE sub-committee on Nagorno Karabakh will play an important role in resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

"The activity of the sub-committee on Nagorno-Karabakh in the PACE Bureau will play an important role in informing the world about Azerbaijan's truth. We will do our best for this," the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, MP Samad Seyidov, told media.

The Bureau made a decision to restore the activity of the sub-committee. Everybody except Armenian representatives voted for Jordi Xucla i Costa, a Spanish MP and a member of the Liberal Party.

After the death of the chairman of the subcommittee Lord Russell-Johnston, the activity of this organization was suspended.

During the summer session of PACE launched on June 21, 2010, the representatives of Azerbaijan and Armenia met and discussed the issue of restoration of the sub-committee. However, the activity of the subcommittee was not restored because of the unconstructive position of Armenia.

He said that the sub-committee will include co-rapporteurs for both countries, as well as members of the delegations from Azerbaijan and Armenia to PACE both from the authority and opposition.

He said that only the issue of restoring the sub-committee's activity was discussed in the Bureau. The issues of forming and activity of the subcommittee will be on the agenda for the April session of PACE.

He said that the basis of a sub-committee was founded when Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE.

"The initiative of the development of Resolution 1416 was put forward by President Aliyev when he was the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE. The first item of the resolution was associated with the establishment of the sub-committee on Nagorno-Karabakh. The sub-committee was established and functioned that period. Its activity gave results. But after the death of Lord Russell-Johnston, Armenia made great efforts to suspend its activity, violate the activity of the sub-committee and recognize its vainness. But we declared our position. We strived to establish the sub-committee," Seyidov said.
