Azerbaijani Human Rights Commissioner meets EU special representative for South Caucasus

Human Rights Commissioner of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova met EU special representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby on Monday.

The EU special representative inquired about what is being done in Azerbaijan in the sphere of human rights.

Suleymanova said National Preventive Mechanism had been established in Azerbaijan in accordance with the Facultative Protocol of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. She added there was close cooperation with OSCE in this area.

The Ombudsperson noted protection of media rights, prevention of rude treatment of journalists was in the focus of attention in the country.

Semneby underlined the importance of an Ombudsman Institute for protection of human rights. The sides also discussed other issues of mutual interest.
