Azerbaijani ombudsman: Prison conditions have improved in Azerbaijan lately

Prison conditions have been improved in Azerbaijan for the last years, ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said.

Azerbaijan has recently improved the level of medical care provided to prisoners. The quality of food quality has been improved. A number of new prisons have been built. Old builings have been repaired, she told media.

She welcomes the recent presidential decree to pardon a number of prisoners. She said that seven people from the list were released in accordance with the request of the ombudsman. In total, roughly 326 prisoners have been pardoned at the request of the ombudsman.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on Wednesday to pardon a number of prisoners, official website of President reported.

The order pardoned 71 persons sentenced to imprisonment, 15 persons sentenced to limitation of freedom, 5 sentenced to a penalty, and one sentenced to conditional punishment.

Four of those pardoned are citizens of Bangladesh and two - Pakistan. Order comes into force from the day of signing.
