27 December 2010 [11:15] - TODAY.AZ
"I will not  run for the Party leadership during the next party convention and à new leader will be selected, said opposition Musavat Party leader Isa Gambar during his speech in the assembly session of the party.

"There is no doubt, a new leader will be selected. There are enough high-level politicians in "Musavat".  Each of them could be chosen. And we will provide assistence to the selected one to enable him to carry out the Party`s mission. We attach importance to democratic procedures", Gambar said.

"I will stay as a Party member and will provide advise if there is any necessity" - he added.

During his speech "Musavat" leader made clear his position on the issue of unity of Musavat. and Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP).

"Some say that the Musavat Ðarty does not hold its word on this issue. But a range of Internet sites have a videotape with my opinion on this issue. I have proposed parties fidel to the principles of  Rasulzade and Elchibey to unite. It was APFP who responded first", Gambar said.

Musavat leader has made his proposal on July 15 during the event devoted to the 21st anniversary of establishment of the APFP. The first reaction to this proposal came from the APFP. During the convention of the Popular Front Party held on 25 September, it was decided to unite with Musavat Party.

The party leader said that some outgoing party members were trying to discredit Party`s reputation. "I would advise  those people to stay the way they used to be while they were carrying out their commitments with dignity within the Party" Gambar said.

Musavat Party was established in October 1911 in Baku. On May 28, 1918 in Tbilisi, Musavat Party together with several parties announced the independence of Azerbaijan. In connection with the occupation of Azerbaijan by the Red Army in 1920, Musavat Party proceeded to the secret activities.

The party was re-launched Nov. 7, 1992. Isa Gambar was elected chief of the party. A former parliamentary speaker, Gambar ran in the 2003 presidential elections.
