Turkmenistan's president appoints new ambassador to Azerbaijan

24 December 2010 [10:35] - TODAY.AZ
Toyly Komekov has been appointed ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Since 2009 he was the head of the State Enterprise on Caspian Sea under the president of Turkmenistan, the official Turkmen sources report.

The corresponding decree was signed by the President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Last two years Komekov also served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and repeatedly led his country's delegation during bilateral talks in Baku. He also was the head of the State Committee for Fisheries.

Turkmenistan, along with Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Iran, borders the Caspian Sea which is rich in hydrocarbons and bio-resources. After the collapse of the Soviet Union arose the need for a new agreement on legal status of the reservoir.

The five Caspian states have agreed that the Convention could be adopted only by consensus. Until then the legal regime established by the Soviet-Iranian treaties is in force.
