Azerbaijani parliament adopts law on transfer of media powers to ombudsman

Today, the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted Law 'On the transfer of the Press Envoy's authority to the Human Rights Ombudsman" on the first reading.

The rules on consideration of complaints over the violation of Human Rights Ombudsman's right to receive the information are reflected in the draft law on amendments and additions to the Law of the Constitution "On the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan."

Parliamentary Legal Policy and State Building Committee Chairman Ali Huseynov informed about the bill.

The Commissioner monitors the implementation of obligations arising from the requirements of the law of Azerbaijan Republic "On receipt of information" by the public authorities, local governments and officials who are holders of information.

One of the features of consideration of complaints over the violation of Human Rights Ombudsman's right to receive the information is that the commissioner shall, within ten working days, investigate cases reflected in the complaint for violation of the rights to obtain information.

Those responsible for creating obstacles in the activities of the authorized will be responsible under the law of Azerbaijan Republic.

"Changes to the law will meet the requirements of modern times," Parliamentary Human Rights Committee chairman Rabiyat Aslanova said.

She said the application of the provisions of international conventions in Azerbaijan serve as a reason for the changes in the activities of the institute and lead to its expansion.

The parliamentary meeting held on Tuesday adopted amendments to this law. The second vote will take place within six months.

The Azerbaijani Press Council opposes transferring media power to the ombudsman. In this regard, the council has sent an appeal to President Ilham Aliyev.
