Goran Lennmarker: A new war in Karabakh would be a disaster

26 November 2010 [18:27] - TODAY.AZ
The international community has an idea about what will be solution to the Karabakh conflict, former special envoy of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Goran Lennmarker said at a conference in Yerevan today, according to ArmToday.

However, he noted in the Karabakh conflict settlement emphasis should be placed not on technical solution to the problem, but rather on political will of the parties to the conflict to find a solution.

Both Armenia and Azerbaijan should refrain from policy of recriminations and accusations and begin an internal debate and discussion on whether there is willingness to resolve the conflict and the peoples of the countries should be prepared for a political solution and compromise, he said.

"Neither side can achieve a 100% result," said Lennmarker.

Noting that the time has come to move towards resolving the conflict, Lennmarker also stressed that the Karabakh conflict currently can not be considered frozen.

"Every year about 20 individuals are killed in the conflict zone, the current situation also requires certain economic and political costs," he said.

Commenting on how he evaluates the statement that Azerbaijan intends to return the occupied territories by any means, Lennmarker said: "We need to understand that a peaceful settlement is a peaceful settlement with no shootings and fighting. The entire Minsk process is aimed at preventing the outbreak of hostilities. "

Asked about the possibility of renewed hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, Lennmarker said: "Of course, the war would be a disaster, but I do not think such a development is possible.”
