
The strategic position of Azerbaijan being located in transit corridor of “Silk Road” and the leadership in the region as well as the integration to European Union turns the management of borders of Azerbaijan into a very important issue.
The beneficial and reliable management of borders of Azerbaijan in past 10 years has strengthened the spheres of security and independence.
The government of Azerbaijan closely cooperates with European Union and other well recognized international organizations. It highly appreciates the study of “Integrated border management systems” in member states of European Union and expresses its readiness to jointly implement projects in this sector.
This is why as of September of 2010, the project on “Supporting integrated border management systems in the South Caucasus countries” has officially started to be implemented jointly with the government of Azerbaijan, which is financed by European Union and is implemented by UNDP.
The primary objectives of the project are: increase of national inter-institutional cooperation level in the field of borders management; increase of bilateral and regional cooperation level with neighbouring border countries (excluding Armenia), as well as with member states of European Union and other international organizations; to provide the security of borders and develop strategic management potential; implement pilot programs in the borders (Azerbaijan, Georgia) based on the concept of “Integrated border management” and demonstrate advantages; study the concept on “Integrated border management”, develop an improved document that reflects legislation and realities of Azerbaijan.
The duration of project on “Supporting integrated border management systems in the South Caucausus countries” will last till 2012.
The event, which takes place on October 25 of current year with the participation of the Government of Azerbaijan (MFA, SBS, SCC), Head of Operations Department of the Delegation of the European Union to Azerbaijan, Mr. Jean-Louis Lavroff, UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Fikret Akchura as well as accredited ambassadors of some partner countries, that are member states of European Union, in Azerbaijan and representatives of mass media, is devoted to the presentation of this project.
There will be a detailed presentation made by country manager of the project, Mr. Mezahir Efendiyev on work to be done within the framework of the project on “Supporting integrated border management systems in the South Caucausus countries”.
