President inspects Heydar Aliyev Foundation-initiated repair and reconstruction work at Shamakhy Juma mosque - PHOTOS

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his wife Mehriban Aliyeva inspected Heydar Aliyev Foundation-initiated repair and reconstruction work at the Shamakhy Juma mosque on October 22.

The mosque, considered one of the country's landmark historic and cultural monuments, was built in 743. It was set on fire by the Armenians when committed genocide against the Azerbaijanis in 1918.

The mosque was repaired by a decree from national leader Heydar Aliyev in 1980. President Ilham Aliyev signed an executive order on repair of the Juma mosque after visiting Shamakhy last year.

The mosque's prayer hall occupies an area of 1,316 square meters. The mosque has a conference hall, library and ablution facilities.
