Azerbaijani parliament approves new Election Commission members

08 October 2010 [12:55] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani parliament has today approved three new members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) ahead of next month's parliamentray elections. The parliament approved the nominations of Mikail Rahimov from the Unified Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (UPFPA), Gulaga Aslanli (independent) and Arif Mukhtarov (independent).

MP Panah Huseynov expressed his dissatisfaction that candidates from opposition parties were not admitted to the CEC.

But MP Siyavush Novruzov said that membership of the CEC and district election commissions cannot be provided to parties that lack the necessary support of the electorate and have no prospect of electoral success.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Nov. 7. Previous legislative elections were held in November 2005. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 electoral constituencies.
