Israel's senior rabbin: Jewish people in Azerbaijan are proud that they are Jews

Chairman of the Azerbaijan’s State Committee on Work with Religious Associations Hidayat Orujov received senior rabbin of Israel Shlomo Amar, chief rabbin of Russia Beri Lazar and delegations accompanied them.

Orujov said Azerbaijani people were historically tolerant, the committee sources said.

“Azerbaijan is only country in the former empire that there were no anti-Semitism and national and religious discrimination. Azerbaijan is homeland of tens of other peoples living here, including Jewish people. Our Jewish citizens showed heroism in the struggle for independence of Azerbaijan and in the battles for liberation of Karabakh. Azerbaijani citizen of Jewish national Albert Agarunov is National Hero of Azerbaijan”.

Senior rabbin of Israel Shlomo Amar said Baku amazed him beginning from the airport. “We wonder at the Azerbaijani traditions to welcome the guest. Azerbaijan is a country where Jewish people are proud that they are Jews because there are some countries which have strong position toward the Jewish people. Azerbaijan’s experience can be an example for other countries”.

The sides discussed a number of issues interested them.
