"Results of Medvedev’s visit to Azerbaijan are characteristic enough"

16 September 2010 [09:40] - TODAY.AZ
“Visit of the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev to Baku is not the first. Trips to Azerbaijan and summit visits have for a long time become regular. And it has, of course, left traces on atmosphere of the visit and on its results. Regular work necessarily leads to positive results, and we, being in Baku, were witnesses of this advancement", the rector of the Russian State Humanitarian University, the chairman of the Russia-Azerbaijan Society of Friendship Yefim Pivovar who accompanied the President of Russia during his recent trip to Azerbaijan told in an interview to the correspondent of AzerTAc.

According to him, results of the visit are characteristic enough.

“First, the long preparatory work on border definition between the two countries has come to an end. Russia and Azerbaijan have signed for the first time the boundary treaty, having solved the questions of delimitation. The Azerbaijan Republic for the first time in the history of its independence has signed the first such contract just with Russia, and therefore, it can be regarded as unprecedented event. It speaks about the trust level between two countries and trust level between the heads of state. All complexities connected with use of the border Samur River and questions of water use were simultaneously resolved. Secondly, the sides have signed trading agreements which increase deliveries of the Azerbaijan gas to the Russian Federation. Besides, the vital issues of the intergovernmental commission of two countries which in common works in the field of economic relations have been discussed.”

Speaking on the results of talks, Pivovar said: “At the press conference, it was stated that many questions were resolved. Certainly, there are also painful points, but they are, more likely, of regional character and aren`t reflected in relations between two countries. First of all, it is the Caucasian questions with which Azerbaijan, and also Russia as the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair, is directly connected. The initiative of President Medvedev, concerning meetings of the heads of Azerbaijan and Armenia, is successfully realized. At these meetings, the parties have constantly a dialogue, and it began from the Moscow Declaration. So, as a whole, the process increases, and, the fact of presence of this process is extremely important for our countries and the entire region.”
