Azerbaijani Defense Ministry confirms capture of Azerbaijani army serviceman

31 August 2010 [09:45] - TODAY.AZ
The Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan has confirmed the capture of a serviceman of the Azerbaijani Army Roman Huseynov.
The Azerbaijani serviceman was most likely captured after he lost his way, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry press officer Teymur Abdullayev said.

Earlier, Armenian media outlets reported the capture of Azerbaijani serviceman Roman Huseynov, 25.

The Baku Office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) began investigating reports claiming that Azerbaijani Junior Sergeant Roman Huseynov was captured by the Armenian armed forces.

The Yerevan Office of the ICRC was also asked to clarify these reports, the ICRC Baku Office said earlier.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the United States - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
