17 years pass since Armenia's occupation of Azerbaijan Gubadli region

Today marks 17th anniversary since occupation of Azerbaijan's Gubadli region by the Armenian armed forces.
An area of 802 square kilometres with population of about 30,000 people were occupied by Armenian military forces on Aug. 31, 1993.

Gubadli is distinguished by its favourable geographic location, unique picturesque landscape, rocky and steep mountains, a special colouring attached turbulent rivers - Barkushad and Ackara.

As many as 283 volunteers heroically died while defending the region from the Armenian armed units; 7 of them were awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan. People who survived now have settled in 47 regions across the republic with the most of them living in Sumgait.

Currently, nearly 14 thousand hectares of arable land, 62 institutions and enterprises, 10 houses of culture, dozens of schools, hospitals and catering facilities are under occupation.
