ICRC studies information on Azerbaijani sergeant's capture by Armenian side

30 August 2010 [11:23] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani representation of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) is studying the information about Azerbaijani Armed Forces' junior Sergeant Roman Huseynov's capture by Armenian armed forces.

The ICRC Armenian representation was appealed to clarify the information spread by Armenian media on the capture of 25-year old Huseynov by the Armenian armed forces on Aug. 27, the ICRC Baku office said.

The committee reported that it has not received an official confirmation of the capture of Azerbaijani soldier.

The Armenian media outlets earlier reported Huseynov's capture. The report was not officially confirmed by the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry and the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing People.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
