Azerbaijani Presidential Administration official on possible opening of Turkey-Armenia border for NATO exercises

18 August 2010 [17:20] - TODAY.AZ
“During his visit to Azerbaijan, Turkish President Abdullah Gul did not make his stance on possible opening of the Armenia-Turkey border as part of the NATO exercises clear. But Baku believes that Ankara will not take such a step,” Head of the International Relations Department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Novruz Mammadov said.

“In any case, Azerbaijan does not lose hope," he said.

Novruzov says Turkey does not voice concrete stance on this issue.

“It is unclear whether Turkey plans to take such a step. This issue has been debated for already several months within NATO. Once Turkish Foreign Ministry said Turkey will not open borders for NATO exercises. But in Baku, Turkish leader responded to this question in a broader sense, from a conceptual point of view. His answer was vague. Development of relations between our countries gives us reason to hope Turkey will not temporarily open borders with Armenia through these exercises and activities,” Mammadov added.
