Shocker: "We know, that these territories are not ours, and Armenian soldiers will run once the war starts"

10 August 2010 [16:00] - TODAY.AZ
Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan’s relative Ohan Harutunyan is one of the Armenian soldiers, who crossed into the territory controlled by Azerbaijani Armed Forces in order to get rid of the tyranny in the Armenian army. APA managed to talk to the 19-yr old Ohan Harutunyan, who left the army together with Gevorg Tovmasyan and surrendered to Azerbaijani Armed Forces.

Ohan and Gevorg said they had undergone violence and humiliation in the military unit in Nagorno Karabakh. Gevorg Tovmaysan said he was humiliated by his superior officers, and was even forced to clean up toilets. He added, that he decided to escape and shared his decision with Ohan. Gevorg and Ohan said they had been received well in Azerbaijan and did not want to return to Armenia.

“While crossing the frontline, we thought our conditions would be better than in Armenia. We were received well in Azerbaijan. Our condition is good. We don't have problems with food. We are given everything we need. It is impossible to live in Armenia, there is hunger, unemployment there”.

Ohan Harutunyan says though he is Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan’s relative, he did not ask minister to help when he faced violence and ill-treatment.

“When I faced the situation in the army, I understood that Ohanyan was not a good man and it would be useless to appeal to him,” he said.

To APA’s question about the atmosphere in the Armenian Army Ohan says the Armenians serving in Nagorno Karabakh say they will flee if the war starts.

“We know that these territories are not ours. Most Armenians realize that these territories do not belong to Armenia and they must be returned,” he said.

Soldiers of Armenian Army – Harutunyan Ohan Vadinagiyevich, 19, Tovmasyan Gevorg Serjikovich, 19, crossed into the territory controlled by Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the line of contact in Goranboy region at 13.00, May 31, 2009.
