Interview with Azerbaijanu military expert Mehdi Mehdiyev.
How would you comment on a recent shootout on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian armies that killed four and injured the same number Armenian soldiers and one Azerbaijani officer? This is yet another failed provocation by the Armenian side. It is also provocative attempt on part of Armenia to lay the blame on the Azerbaijani side for the incident. Armenia ignores the huge number of resolutions adopted by various international organizations thast call for withdrawal of troops from occupied Azerbaijani territories.
Armenian leadership, who has failed to voice its response to the updated Madrid principles for already six months, was interested in such provocation to divert attention from its incompliance with the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council and other international organizations that recognize Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and call for withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied lands as well as to divert attention from Armenia’s refusal to express its attitude to the updated Madrid document.
This is not only fiasco of the Armenian side. The opposite side often sallies to test the combat readiness of the Azerbaijani army. Exactly this very sally led to the clashes, which cost Armenia four dead and four injured soldiers. This was another evidence of high combat readiness of the Azerbaijani army and its ability to resist any provocation by the Armenian occupants.
In your opinion, will the Armenian side make necessary conclusions from this contact line incident? The Armenian side is fully aware that the Azerbaijani army is much stronger. Here it would be appropriate to recall the words of Armenian Defense Minister, who once uttered that the main issue in the Armenian army is human factor, but not weapons or military equipment. The hopes for the "human factor" are quite inserious. After all, there is a sense of injustice and rampant distrust of authorities in the Armenian society. The number of population in Armenia is rapidly declining amid tough economic situation. Maily male population leaves the country in search of incomes. Seyran Ohanian meant exactly this “human factor”.
Armenian armed forces broke ceasefire and acted on the offensive in the direction of the Fuzuli region again at 01:45 on June 21...Of course, the latest provocation of the Armenian side was an attempt to revenge for the previous fiasco. Apparently, the Armenian side hopes that the international community and leading world powers have no interest in destabilizing the situation in our region, and therefore will put pressure on Azerbaijan. But these hopes are groundless because that Azerbaijan has the full right to restore its territorial integrity by any means. Given Armenia’s blatant disregard of resolutions of international organizations, torpedoing its negotiation process, our country has the right to choose other ways to restore its territorial integrity. Azerbaijan, unlike Armenia, never claimed to any foreign lands. But we have the right to return what belongs to us.
