Azerbaijani opposition party to hold mass rallies next month

The opposition Musavat party and Union for Democracy will hold mass rallies next month. The decision was made at a meeting June 21, the party said.
The sides also discussed the rallies and inter-party issues. Musavat was founded in Baku in 1911. The party was re-launched Nov. 7, 1992. Isa Gambar was elected head of the party. A former parliamentary speaker, he was nominated to run in the 2003 presidential elections. The party has 4 MPs in parliament.

At the meeting, the opposition forces also decided to visit the grave of late Azerbaijani politican Abulfaz Elchibey on his birthday (June 24). Elchibey was born in 1938 in Nakhchivan. During his presidency, the Soviet troops were withdrawn from the country, the national currency was introduced and an a test system for entrance exams was applied. Elchibey died at the Gulhane Medical Academy in Turkey Aug. 22, 2000 aftera prolonged illness.
