Speaker of Saudi Shura Council visits Azerbaijan's Parliament

Speaker of Saudi Arabia's Consultative Assembly, Shura Council, Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al-Sheikh has visited Azerbaijan`s parliament where he met Speaker Ogtay Asadov.
The Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker praised the relations between the two countries. Asadov said: “The relations between Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan entered a new era after we restored our independence.”

“Our countries` leaders played an outstanding role in bringing our bilateral relations to today`s level,” said Asadov.

“Visits to Saudi Arabia by national leader Heydar Aliyev in 1994 and President Ilham Aliyev in 2005 opened a new page in our relations.”

Asadov also hailed the role of the two countries` parliaments in developing the bilateral relations, stressing the importance of intensifying reciprocal visits by parliamentary friendship groups.

The Speaker highlighted ongoing legal, democratic and economic reforms in Azerbaijan. Asadov also touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, praising Saudi Arabia`s support in this regard.

“We thank the government and people of Saudi Arabia for showing solidarity with us concerning this conflict, for rendering humanitarian assistance to our refugees and IDPs, and for backing Azerbaijan`s just position and territorial integrity.”

“We also praise the fact Saudi Arabia has had no diplomatic relations with Armenia,” added Asadov.

Abdullah Al-Sheikh said he was pleased to be in Azerbaijan, adding: “This is my fourth official foreign visit in the capacity of the Speaker of the Shura Council.”

“I believe our visits will contribute to expanding interparliamentary cooperation, and our relations in other areas,” said Abdullah Al-Sheikh.
