Azerbaijani MP: Day of National Salvation is of great importance for Azerbaijani people

15 June 2010 [11:27] - TODAY.AZ
"Day of National Salvation is of great importance for the Azerbaijani people,” member of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament) Malahat Ibrahimgizi said.
"By June 1993, Azerbaijan faced a threat of losing independence and disintegration. As soon as Mikhail Gorbachev began to rule the Soviet Union, various plans were being developed against Azerbaijan. Though Azerbaijan regained independence after the collapse of the USSR, inexperienced, non-professional politicians who acted on orders from Moscow took the power in the country," she said.

"Until June 1993, Azerbaijan experienced the darkest days in modern history - the tragedy of January 20, 1990, Armenia's occupation Khojaly in 1992 and also occupation of 20% of its territories,” the MP said.

“Until June 1993, the country was ruled by random people who had no experience of public administration. We can say that at that time country’s public administration was paralyzed, country was experiencing economic and political chaos. There was regress in all spheres of life with no any glimmer of hope for future.”

“During those years people did not receive salaries, the country was torn by internal contradictions, various separatist groups tried to split the state creating a danger of civil war. From 1991 to June 1993, Azerbaijan was isolated from the world community. People who were in power, damaged relations with neighboring countries,” the MP added.

"Azerbaijan has always defended its independence throughout the history and regained independence in early 1990s. But by June 1993, Azerbaijan could disintegrate and disappear from the maps. Our country was in a chaotic state, and no one believed we can get out of this situation," Ibrahimgizi said.

"But Azerbaijan gained national salvation after Heydar Aliyev retured to power in June 1993. He succeeded to solve all public issues.”

"National leader saved Azerbaijan by his wisdom, courage, determination and priceless experience. During his tenure, he formed Azerbaijani army, completely neutralized separatist groups and averted a threat of civil war. A ceasefire agreement was signed in May 1994 bringing about a political stability in the country,” the MP noted.

“Azerbaijan, rich in hydrocarbon resources, began to draw attention of leading world powers. In September 1994, "Contract of the Century” was signed which paved a way for Azerbaijan’s success in external, internal and economic policy. Later implementation of such energy projects like Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline and restoration of the "Silk Road" were followed.”

“Today Azerbaijan considers participation in such global projects as Nabucco. Projects whose foundations were laid by national leader Heydar Aliyev are successfully implemented by current President Ilham Aliyev. These projects have brought prosperity, peace and stability not only our country but the whole region and the world community,” the MP underscored.

“Therefore, the date of June 15, 1993, which we are celebrating today as the Day of National Salvation, is inscribed in the history of Azerbaijan as the most glorious page. Our people will never forget the events of those days,” Ibrahimgizi added.
