"Establishment of ADR played an important role in struggle of Azerbaijani people for independence"

"Establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) and its activity that lasted for about two years showed attitude of the Azerbaijani people to democratic society and freedom. In the early 20th century, the Azerbaijani people fought for national independence, and after the events of 1917, achieved its goal on May 28, 1918.”

"It was a great historic event. Azerbaijan created a state with an area of 116,000 square kilometers. ADR had were all necessary state attributes - the anthem, the tricolor flag and the coat of arms. Independent Azerbaijan was recognized by the world countries," the MP said.

"But unfortunately, after Vladimir Lenin came to power and worked to restore borders of tsarist Russia, in April 1920 the ADR lost its independence and Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was established.”

“This was supposedly an independent republic, but subsequent events have shown that in fact it was not. After 1922, Azerbaijan SSR completely lost its independence and was part of the USSR for many years. Azerbaijan was not independent in these years, it (Azerbaijan SSR) was ruled by Moscow," Agamali added.

"In the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the USSR began to collapse, the Azerbaijani people witnessed events similar to those that happened in 1918. The struggle for freedom and independence lies in the genetic code of the Azerbaijani people. Establishment of ADR has played an important role in the subsequent struggle of the Azerbaijani people for independence," he said.

Azerbaijan regained its independence in 1991, the MP said. 

"As soon as Azerbaijan regained independence, it restored state attributes -the anthem, the tricolor flag and coat of arms adopted by ADR, which has a special, important role in Azerbaijan’s history,” the MP concluded.
