
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Italy Emil Karimov participated in the opening of an obelisk in memory of Soviet soldiers of the Ninth Corps of 18 brigade of the Yugoslavian People's Liberation Army, who died during the liberation of the Trieste city from the Nazis in 1943-45, the embassy reported.
Trieste Mayor Roberto Dipiazza said that the memorial obelisk is important not only for residents but for all countries, whose soldiers who took part in the battles, and is a step aimed at perpetuating the memory of all soldiers who died for the liberation of the city.
Karimov stressed that there were dozens of Azerbaijanis among the men who died in battles for the liberation of Trieste. He said the obelisk is a symbol of remembrance of the fighters and respect for them.
The memorial obelisk erected by the Kazak government on the central alley of the military cemeteries of the city of Trieste, reflects the names of 104 soldiers who died fighting against fascism, among which are the names of Azerbaijanis.
