Azerbaijani MP: Events of 1918 can be called nothing but genocide

31 March 2010 [13:06] - TODAY.AZ
"Many parliamentarians in different countries around the world are well aware of genocide of Azerbaijanis in 1928,” representative of the Jewish Community of Azerbaijan and member of the Azerbaijani Parliament Yevda Abramov said.

“We have marked anniversaries of those events at the state level since 1998. Relevant museums and memorials have been establishes nationwide. It would be fair if parliaments of authoritative countries officially recognized the genocide of the people of Azerbaijan in 1918,” the MP said.

“But it's very difficult to achieve. We must first prove the world that this massacre was a real genocide.”

”For example, the Eurasian Research Center recently presented a film about those events. There should be more that kind of steps at all levels including parliamentary, diplomatic and interstate,” the MP added.

“The Azerbaijani diaspora should continue propoganda work in this direction. But we cannot hope that the recognition will follow immediately.”

“Armenians have struggled for recognition of their far-fetched genocide so many years. But we have just started our fair struggle,” Abramov noted.

"But the fact of genocide in Azerbaijan in 1918 remains a fact even if European and American parliaments do not recognize our truth in the next few years. The time will come, and new generations of these countries will learn this historical truth about Azerbaijan.”

“We need to make more efforts to bring proven facts about the events of 1918 to international community's attention. Jews could do this on the basis of those massacres committed by the Hitler regime. Documents, photographs and eyewitness accounts were collected. That is what we need to do. The world needs facts. "
