Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry refutes reports about neutralization of Azerbaijani commando by Armenia

06 March 2010 [14:00] - TODAY.AZ
"The Armenian Defense Ministry's information about the removal of the Azerbaijani commando by the Armenian side is an absolute lie and a fabrication", employee of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry's Press Service Abbas Shirinov said.

The Armenian Armed Forces' soldiers defused the Azerbaijani commando, Novosti Armenia news agency reported with reference to the Armenian Defense Ministry.

The source re[ports that March 3, the Azerbaijani armed commando comprising  5-6 people invaded the Armenian territory near the village of Koti in the Tavush region of Armenia.

"The Armenian armed force was able to neutralize the commando as a result of special measures. The Azerbaijani commando suffered losses. One dead body is on the Armenian territory, one seriously wounded commando died on the way to hospital and another dead body is supposedly in the neutral zone," the report says.

According to the Defense Ministry, the other wounded members of the commando managed to escape, crossing the border.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied territories.
