Azerbaijani top official: U.S. does not want to lose allies such as Azerbaijan and Turkey

05 March 2010 [14:48] - TODAY.AZ
Although, the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a resolution recognizing the so-called "Armenian genocide", President Barack Obama is wise enough to prevent recognition of "Armenian genocide", Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker Ogtay Asadov said.

"There is no doubt that the adoption of the resolution by the U.S. Congress Foreign Affairs Committee was a result of pressure from the Armenian lobby. But I think that, as in 2007, Barack Obama, and the State Department will not tolerate the continuation of the process on recognition of the so-called "Armenian genocide," he said at the today's parliamentary meeting.

"The U.S. does not want to lose allies such as Azerbaijan and Turkey," he said.

He said the Azerbaijani and Turkish MPs should work together to prevent further anti-Turkish steps aimed at recognition of the so-called "Armenian genocide".

"Pressure on Turkey is directed also against Azerbaijan. Parliamentarians of both countries should take this into account and strengthen relations with the U.S. congressmen," he said.

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs approved the resolution on incidents of 1915 --which took place shortly before the fall of the Ottoman Empire-- with 23 votes against 22.
