Azerbaijani FM addresses Afghanistan conference in London

30 January 2010 [09:21] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan unambiguously supports international efforts to establish peace and stability in Afghanistan, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said Thursday in his address to the international conference on Afghanistan held in London.

Saying Azerbaijan joined the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) from the very first days, Mammadyarov noted Azerbaijan doubled its contingent in Afghanistan to 90 troops in 2009.

Azerbaijan is poised to send army doctors to Afghanistan, welcome Afghan students at the Azerbaijan Medical University and allow this country’s medical personnel to take courses here.

Mammadyarov stressed Azerbaijan is ready to contribute to ISAF in terms of the support for public diplomacy in order to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister said Azerbaijan provided its infrastructure for cargo shipments to Afghanistan, adding construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will offer additional opportunities for safe and speedy transit to Afghanistan.
