The victims of 20th January tragedy played a great role in recognition of Azerbaijan as an independent state, Turkish Parliamentary Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin told reporters in Baku on Sept. 26 after visiting the Martyrs Lane.

Ali Sahin appraised the Turkish troops' contribution to Azerbaijan's independence, who defended it from the Armenian Dashnaks in 1918.
Ali Sahin is on an official visit to Baku. He aims to participate in the first session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Turkish-speaking countries. The Turkish parliament speaker will hold a series of meetings.
The first session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Turkish-speaking countries will be held in Baku on Sept. 28-29.
Turkish former Justice Minister Ali Sahin was elected Speaker of the Turkish parliament in August.
Ali Sahin is one of the founders of the ruling Justice and Development Party. He was Vice-Premier and State Minister under two governments led Erdogan.
