Nokia makes error related to Azerbaijan – Photo

09 September 2009 [14:53] - TODAY.AZ
Nokia, world-famous cell phones producer, has made an error related to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Service Ovi Maps, which enables to view maps with the help of the latest Nokia models, to learn exact weather forecast and all sorts of routes, misleads phone owners.

Once you have a look at the map of Azerbaijan, you can see a town called ... Stepanakert on country’s territory. This is Armenian name for Khankandi, Azerbaijani town in Nagorno-Karabakh occupied by Armenia. Remarkable fact is that if you give a search for the Azerbaijani town of Khankandi, it ... also appears on the map slightly higher than the town indicated as Stepanakert.

It is quite possible that ‘professionals’ who created these maps did not want to hurt anyone, and indicated both towns on the map.

Certainly, this disturbing fact should not be overlooked by the Azerbaijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, relevant bodies, Azerbaijanis living abroad, and, of course, Today.Az. readers.

We hope that this mistake will be corrected as soon as possible, since the Nokia brand is very prevalent in Azerbaijan and the company does not need that kind of ads at all.

We urge all Today.Az readers who are aware of the truth to write a protest letter to [email protected].

Sample letter in English:

Hello,

I am writing on the issue of your Ovi Maps service. I consider it to be important to bring into your notice that Ovi map related to Azerbaijan includes gross mistakes which harms Azerbaijan’s interests.

In particular, when using the search, on the Nagorno-Karabakh territory (which is a part of Azerbaijan) Stepanakert appears along with Khankandi. Stepanakert and Khankandi is the same town while your map shows the opposite. Besides, since Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognized part of Azerbaijan, there should only be Khankandi, without Stepanakert (which is Armenian name for Khankandi).

I believe this is clearly a misunderstanding, and kindly ask you to remove Stepanakert from the list of towns, leaving only Khankandi. Hope to see this corrected as soon as possible since this could really damage your company’s reputation in Azerbaijan.

Thank you in advance.
